2. Dual Talents

Remember back when Rin just casually mentioned her not being aware of anyone with more than two talents? What, two? Who does she know who has two talents? And what counts as two separate talents instead of one talent that does multiple things? Is Moguo creating a small fireball instead of a big fireball a different talent? I think most people would say no. Now if Moguo were to create a rock inside of his other hand instead that I think we would all say would be a separate talent. Only there is not a single character in the entire series that has the ability to do two things so different with only their own talent(s), so we need a better way to draw the line between one single versatile talent or two distinct talents.

Mechanical Patterns

When you last walked somewhere, how exactly did you do that? You just walked, right? Well that's the way our minds think about it, we are actually tightening and relaxing our leg muscles in a specific pattern that results in us being in a different location than we just were. Our brains are phenomenal though with pattern recognition, and not so great with keeping track of lots of small details, so instead of keeping track of all those low-order[1] actions, it sees that when we tighten and relax our leg muscles this way we end up in a different location, and it simplifies that as the higher-order[2] concept of "walking."

This isn't even limited just to walking either, every single action that has been performed by any human to have ever lived can be broken down similarly. So why should talents be considered any different? Unfortunately we are unable to identify how exactly talented people are able to do things that are impossible for anyone in our world to do in as low of a level as individual muscle movements, so we need to identify what a talented individual does in a high enough level that we can still understand what's happening, but in a low enough level that we can remove any ambiguity about what a talent can and can't do. In other words, a talent can be broken down to mean "The simplest action that a talentless human is unable to do" Then if we see a talented person produce an effect that would be impossible even with access to that action, we should be able to say for sure that this is a second talent, even if it's thematically similar to their primary talent.

I'm sure someone out there is screaming "It's a fictional story about superheroes, you can't apply the real world logic and physics to it." Maybe they're right. They certainly would be if this was a different series we were talking about. Talentless Nana, however is 100% THE series we can look at with this kind of thinking because it was designed with it in mind from the start. How would Nana have gone about killing Moguo for example if she never stopped killing back in the beginning of the series? Probably trap him in one of the wooden sheds around the island which she converted into a vacuum chamber[3] in advance and then pull a vacuum on it while he was locked inside, then let him struggle to burn it down to escape but fail because fire needs oxygen, which she just removed it and now it's just waiting for him to suffocate. Applying real world logic to super powers is what this series is all about, so let's get started on that, shall we?

A vacuum chamber is a room or box that is built to be airtight as well as sturdy, with the only point anything can enter or exit once sealed is through a single point where a machine is then connected that when turned on, removes all of the oxygen and other atmospheric gasses from the area and then sealing again to create a totally inert atmosphere, which is required for the conditions of certain chemical reactions, such as those used to produce Grignard Reagents or other various oxygen-or-water-sensitive reactions. An improperly built vacuum chamber may either not be airtight, in which case air would be pulled in through the cracks to replace any removed air, or not be sturdy, which would lead to a possible implosion once the vacuum is pulled as the walls of the chamber are also being effected by the vacuum's pull ↩︎
